Chapter 9

By the time we finished with our main courses, I was so full that I was pretty sure I was gonna need a wheelbarrow to haul me out, but Calamity insisted on splitting the desert of the night, which was Panna Cotta with caramel popcorn topping. Well, technically she didn't want to split it, but that’s what she settled for. I was a little hesitant because it didn't seem to me like popcorn went with Panna Cotta but once it came, my life was changed forever. The pieces of crunchy, salty, sweet bits mixed with the smooth, creamy custard to create an experience I'd never forget.

"That was incredible," Aaron said, leaning back in the booth and patting his stomach.

I mirrored his pose and agreed, though I'm sure it came out as more of a groan. "It was, but I think we should probably go for a walk. If I teleport home, I'll end up falling asleep, then I'll be up at two o'clock in the morning."

He laughed. "I think that's a good idea. Maybe we could head over to Vendors Row. With the convention in town, there are probably a lot of extra booths still open, and maybe we'll pick out some cool stuff. If nothing else, it'll be a great place to people watch."

At the mention of Vendors Row, my mind changed gears and slipped back into work mode. "Yeah, that sounds like a great idea, plus maybe we can talk to the two vendors and see if they can shed any light on the thief."

Calamity sighed. "You just had to ruin the evening by bringin’ work back into it, didn't you? I realize it's important, but it's also important for you to give your brain a break sometimes."

She was right, but she also knew I didn't work that way. It was hard for me to just shut down and shove things in their mental boxes before they were finished, so if I wanted to quit thinking about it, I needed to solve it. Plus, even though nothing bad had happened so far, if Kira thought it was a soul, then nothing good was going to come of letting it wait.

"I realize that," I replied. "But if we’re gonna be over there anyway, we might as well stop and check."

Aaron insisted on picking up the check, and I smiled. We’d been coasting along at that spot between friendship and dating, which was okay with me, or at least it had been up ‘til now. I was starting to get to know him better, and the more I did, the more I wanted to move out of the friend zone completely. That was an awkward place for me, though, because I'd never really started out as friends with anybody I’d ever dated. I have to say, though, I was enjoying it.

"So, was this an official date?" I held my breath because neither one of us had really ever addressed it. I was pretty sure I wasn't getting the wrong vibe, but there was still a little niggle of worry in the back of my brain.
